Laguna Beach

This is the Laguna Beach hot spot. The Main Beach is non-stop entertainment. The beach is located right off the coast highway and across the street from various restaurants and shops in downtown Laguna Beach. Sunbathers to surfers crowd this small stretch of sand to enjoy the trendy OC beach scene. This is the place to be in Laguna Beach during the summer months. The volley ball and basket ball courts are rarely empty and the skillfully landscaped walking path leads you through beautiful Heisler Park.

Parking can be tricky here, as limited metered parking is available on the street, around the beach area and on side streets connected to the coast highway (.25 cents per 15 minutes). So don’t forget those quarters.

The Main Beach is part of the Laguna Beach Ecological Reserve therefore all forms of aquatic life are protected. For this reason much of the aquatic activity is limited. Surfing is often restricted to certain areas (look for the black ball flags). Summer waves are often very small and break right onto the beach. Not great conditions for surfers, but can be fun for skim boarders and body surfing. Strong currents and riptides make swimming dangerous. There are usually signs posted which recommend the best time to swim and scuba dive. Beware of the jellyfish. They like to hang out at this beach in the summer.

The lifeguard tower at the Main Beach is one of the beaches landmarks. It sits directly in the center of the beach. It was originally part of a gas station built across the street in the mid 1930's. When the station was demolished, the tower was moved to its present location and converted for lifeguard purposes. The current Lifeguard Headquarters is at the north end of Main Beach.

The weekends are a popular time to visit this beach. Artists and musicians align along the main path to publicly display their talents, while people are out at all hours of the day strolling up and down the boardwalk. The art scene is big here in Laguna Beach. Each night during the summer season the Festival of Arts presents its most famous attraction, the Pageant of the Masters. It is a show which brings tourists from all over to see art come to life.
