Needle Rock Beach

Location: Mendocino County, California

NEEDLE ROCK BEACH: This is primarily a part of a California hiking trail that is incredible. It is only a total of 3 miles, beginning at the Sinkyone Park Visiting Center in Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. The trail moves west over gently sloping grassy headlands leading to a long winding stairway going up the “Whale Gulch Trail.” The hike takes you along dark-sand-beach besides high cliffs cut with many steep gulches that have waterfalls during the spring months. It is an oasis of incredible beauty.

SINKYONE WILDERNESS STATE PARK: The rugged wilderness that once characterized the entire Mendocino Coast can still be explored and enjoyed in the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Since there are no main highways near the coast in this vicinity, and because of this, the area is known as the "Lost Coast." Sinkyone is located about an hour north of Fort Bragg on Pacific Coast Highway. This park is really a zoological backyard It It is not uncommon to find Roosevelt Elk herds, which are the prevailing sight, however, there are seals, sea lion, river otter, bob cat, cougar (Mountain Lion), bear and the list goes on with the smaller animals to numerous to mention. Sinkyone Wilderness does offer opportunities for backpacking and primitive hike-in camping. There are no facilities or access for motor homes or trailers.

WARNING: Roads may be impassable in wet weather. Because of varied weather, RV’s and Trailer’s are not recommended. It is further important to note: Sinkyone Wilderness State Park is located within "Bear Country". State Park regulations require that visitors store all food and scented items properly at all times.

NEEDLE ROCK BEACH CLIMATE: During the summer temperatures range from45-75 degrees and morning and evening fog is common. During the winter months, temperatures will range from about 35-55 degrees. Between November and May is the greatest rainfall that will encompass up to around 80 inches. With varying weather temps, layering is highly recommended.
