Barnum Museum was originally built by P.T.Barnum and houses an extensive collection related to him as well as the history of Bridgeport. He had commissioned this building to house the work of Bridgeport Scientific Society and the Fairfield County Historical Society. The structure was completed in 1893. The three-story museum is built in stone and terra cotta and has a strong of various architectural styles ranging Byzantine, Islamic, Gothic and Romanesque. Relief panels line the top of the building and contain imagery from America’s history including Native American, maritime, Civil Wars and Industrial Age reliefs. The museum also features the little person Gen. Tom Thumb (one of his renowned acts) and also the “Swedish Nightingale” opera singer Jenny Lind.
