Located off Highway 360E on Hana Highway, just beyond mile maker 32, a paved road to the left leads to Waianapanapa State Park. The cave is situated next to the black sand beach. According to local accounts the secluded cave served as a hiding place for a Hawaiian princess escaping her pursuers and her reflection in the pools revealed her location to be captured. The cave is well-marked with informational plaque. The water in the cave is brackish and extremely cold. Tiny endemic shrimp, `opae `ula, hatch in the water during the spring providing the legendary red color well known as the glistening waters of Waianapanapa in Hawaii. Each year countless red shrimp appear in the fresh water of this cave. Legend has it that the glistening waters of Waianapanapa turn red as testimony to the tragic historic event.
