Hiking Lusk Creek Canyon

The Lusk Creek Wilderness Area is located in northern Pope County in Illinois. The area is known for the imposing rock walls that rise in places 100 feet above the creek. The cliffs at Indian Kitchen are particularly impressive. There are also several Illinois national park attractions in and around Lusk Creek Canyon for visitors to explore, including a number of small caves at the nearby Lusk Creek Nature Preserve.

The 3.5 mile-long round trip National Park hiking trail to Indian Kitchen is almost entirely flat until the final quarter mile, which descends into the canyon. The area by the creek called Indian Kitchen shows evidence that Native Americans used this area for thousands of years. Further exploration into the canyon past Indian Kitchen requires an Illinois hiking topographical map, and there are no restroom facilities or other amenities available.
