Springfield

Old State Capitol

This historic building served as the seat of the state government and as a center of political activity from 1839 to 1876 during the dramatic years which eventually led to the Civil War. Lincoln frequently visited this building and delivered the famous 1858 ‘House Divided’ speech in the Representatives Hall. This Greek-Revival style building is also the place where he finally lay-in-state after his assassination in 1865.
