This historic structure located in Washington Park is a Works Progress Administration project from the 1930s. The stone lookout tower was designed by Fred Ahlgrim in an Art Deco style and can be accessed through the Washington Park Zoo. The tower provides a spectacular view from its summit, which has about 220 steps above street level. Washington Park, a beautiful municipal park is home to this historic structure that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The stairway to Observation Tower provides views of Lake Michigan have been perched atop a sand dune in the park. This extraordinary feature at the zoo in the form of an observation tower gives a bird-eye view of Michigan City and the Lake Michigan shoreline.
