Established in 1948, Des Moines Art Center houses an all-embracing collection of paintings, sculpture, modern-art and mixed media. The huge main gallery runs several rotating exhibitions of varying duration all years round. Included in such displays are solo shows, travelling shows and thematic group shows. The permanent collections range from print and photography displays to several other chronological and theme based displays. Some paintings from the collection are well known examples of the artist and/or movement they represent. This internationally acclaimed museum has impressive works by artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Edward Hopper, Georgia O`Keefe and Henri Matisse. The center offering art classes, consists of three buildings designed by celebrated architects - Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei and Richard Meier. Included on the grounds are outdoor sculptures, surrounding pools and a rose garden. The Art Center also includes a reference library, restaurant and a gift shop.
