Lake Calhoun

Lake Calhoun, one of the larger lakes in Minneapolis and also the part of the city's Chain of Lakes. The lake is surrounded by the city park land and circled by bike and walking trails. With the area of 401 acres, the lake is a popular destination for outdoor activities. The lake is well known for canoeing,kayaking ,windsurfing and its swimming beaches. The beaches are Calhoun North Beach, Calhoun 32nd Beach and Calhoun Thomas beach. The surrounding area allows the tourists to go for picnicking, volleyball and athletics. It is also the home for sailing hosting the Calhoun Yacht club. The lake draws over millions of visitors every year and has become the second most popular visitor destination in America. Parking on Sundays or weekends is impossible on the beach, so much is the rush on the beach.

A 3.2 mile paved bike and skating trail and 3.1 mile jogging and walking trail encircles the lake. There are two fishing docks with wheel chair access to enable casting into the deeper waters. The fishes in the water are Bluegill, Northern pike, Largemouth Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Carp and Bullhead. The fishing doesn't stop when the lake freezes but the people go on for ice fishing. Portable ice houses spring up along the shore as soon as the ice is thick enough for ice fishing. Others not interested in fishes can go for snowkiting on frozen lake. The local scuba center on the lake rents the snowkiting equipment and also organizes the referral lessons for the newbies. The lake mostly attracts younger crowd to the sandy beach for volleyball, sunbathing, picnics and people watching. It is the one of the best outdoor place to hang out in Minneapolis. With many cities cited as concrete jungles, Minneapolis portrays its beauty with Lake Calhoun.
