Angostura Reservoir Beach

Angostura Reservoir, situated in western South Dakota is one of only a few reservoirs in the entire state. Earlier, the dam was built for irrigation purposes, but today it is one of the best source of recreation. It is said to be the heaven for water lovers, especially swimmers.

The average depth of the lake is 29 feet and its summer temperature is 66 degrees F. The lake has almost 36 miles of shoreline and few of the finest sandy beaches on the reservoir. It also has a floating convenience store. Because of boating, fishing and swimming, most visitors are attracted to its clear waters and natural sand beaches.

You can find here different fish species, such as walleye, bass, northern pike, perch, bluegill, and crappie. As the reservoir is located on the southeastern edge of the Black Hills, it is most popular for migrating waterbirds that follow the eastern edge of the Black Hills. The lbeach also is a habitat for migrant passerine species that travel along the Cheyenne River on their twice-yearly flights to and from the north and the west.

Just close to the beach , you can find Hot Springs town, located 10 miles North West on US Hwy 385//18. It has four campgrounds along the shores of the water which offer a wide variety of accommodations. There are also six cabins which over look the water. Other nearby attraction include Custer State Park, the George S. Mickelson Trail, a mammoth site in Hot Springs, and the Wind Cave National Park.
