Lake Thompson Beach

Lake Thompson is said to be the second largest natural lake in South Dakota, spread in an area of around 15,000 - 20,000 acres. This lake was formed in the glacier age. The beach on this lake has about 5.1 miles of combined lakeshore frontage, depths around 20' and was stocked with large numbers of several species of adult fish and fry including Walleye, Northern Pike, Crappie, Yellow Perch and Bass. Fishing at this beach has been an excellent as the diverse habitat, that has proven to be one of the country's most popular fisheries.

The beach offers 103 campsites, each having a fire ring and picnic table. Out of these, four offer the breath taking views of the lake. It provides with great boat launching facilities includes a double-lane ramp, a dock, toilet and paved parking lot. Two more boat-launching sites are available at a nearby lakeside use area, located 5 miles south of DeSmet on Hwy 25, then 3 miles east. These boat ramps provide access to both lake Henry and Lake Thompson.

At the beach front a large lake access state recreation area has been created, which is popular for wildlife production areas, walking areas, hunting areas etc. This beach provides camping facilities, nature areas, fishing and boat ramps etc.
